Today, Jaiku released an enthusiastically anticipated update to their S60 3rd edition mobile application. This app enables jaiku users to view their jaiku presence stream and see their contacts' most recent updates at a glance (see contact list in screenshot at left). The contact list also shows the contact's current phone profile if that contact is using an S60 phone with the Jaiku mobile app running. My Jaiku username is karen2, and you can see my user photo, most recent update, and a yellow ball indicating that my phone is currently set to "Silent" profile. This is especially handy for Jaiku users who regularly call each other -- they can determine if it's a convenient time to call by checking their contact's status on their mobile phone.

By using the Jaiku mobile app, my phone's profile is also automatically posted on my Jaiku page (see middle screenshot). This means that any of my contacts can view my phone's profile on my Jaiku web page and use that information to determine whether I'm available for a call, even if they don't use an S60 phone themselves. Pretty sweet!



Clicking over to my presence stream on the Jaiku mobile app (see bottom screenshot) I can view my contacts' Jaiku posts as well as their comments (responses) to Jaiku posts. I can post a Jaiku to let my contacts know what's happening for me right then, or I can add  comments to my contacts' Jaiku posts.

In response to user concerns about the impact on battery life of running an always-on app, the Jaiku team has provided a setting to enable the user to select better battery life.

I had the good fortune to participate in Jaiku's private beta test group for this application, and can attest to the responsiveness and skill of the Jaiku team in designing an application to meet Jaiku users' needs.
